5 COMMON CUSTOMS MISTAKES IN NEPAL AND HOW TO AVOID THEM
Customs is the step where many international shipments get stuck. The good news is that most delays are caused by a handful of avoidable mistakes. Here are the issues we see most often when shipping to and from Nepal — and how to prevent them.
1. Incomplete or incorrect invoices
Every shipment needs a clear commercial or proforma invoice listing each item, its quantity, unit value and total value. Vague descriptions like “gifts” or “goods” often lead to holds and questions. Describe items specifically, for example “cotton t-shirts – 20 pcs”.
2. Wrong HS codes
HS (Harmonized System) codes classify goods for duty and regulations. An incorrect code can mean the wrong duty rate, extra inspection or even a penalty. Our team checks HS codes for you before the shipment leaves.
3. Under- or over-declared values
Declaring a value far below the real price can trigger valuation checks, while over-declaring increases duty for the receiver. Always declare the true transaction value.
4. Restricted or prohibited items
Items such as liquids, batteries, medicines, food products, precious metals or items made from protected wildlife may be restricted in Nepal or at the destination. Always ask us before packing anything you are unsure about.
5. Missing permits and documents
Some goods need extra paperwork, for example a certificate of origin, export permit or phytosanitary certificate. Missing documents is one of the biggest causes of delays.
